I started researching better vacuum cleaner options when Sophi’s allergies got progressively worse and I became desperate to help her find some relief. Luckily for us, her allergies were predominantly “contact” allergens such as dust and dirt embedded in the carpet. I thought I had a decent vacuum cleaner but I have never been overly impressed with any of my previous purchases. I refuse to spend over $500, for a top of the line vacuum cleaner, and all of my previous models were disappointing because they couldn’t handle the long hair that dominated my house even before Sophi came to live with me and because vacuuming seemed to “stir things up” to make everyone’s allergies flare. In the past, I have always hovered around the $200-$300 price point and did not want to spend too much more with a new purchase.
My requirements were pretty extensive this time around; I needed a bagless, upright vacuum cleaner that could handle long hair and pet hair, with a HEPA filter to contain the dust and dirt, that could vacuum different surfaces, and, most importantly, should cost less than $350, which was my budget based on my current needs. After some serious research, I narrowed my final choice down to the Bissell Upright Pet Hair Eraser Vacuum Cleaner Model #2087.
I was extremely happy with the price of this vacuum cleaner which I got, on sale at walmart.com, for $250 with free pick up at the store. Could it deliver though on the other equally important requirements? That is a resounding YES!
I took my brand new Bissell vacuum cleaner out of the box and promptly took it for a test run! After vacuuming over the carpet in Sophi’s playroom, I filled up the chamber almost immediately and had to empty; it couldn’t have been easier. The canister pops off with little effort and has a button at the bottom to release the contents into the trashcan. TIP: After using your vacuum cleaner several times, dust and dirt can get wedged up into the chamber and you might have to pull it out manually when emptying. This is a minor nuisance and not something I would consider to be a negative; just something that happens when your vacuum cleaner is doing a great job with sucking up the yucky stuff in your carpets.
The next day when I used my Bissell vacuum cleaner, it was serious business! I vacuumed my whole downstairs, really taking my time to go over the carpets where Sophi walks and plays with great care. The Bissell 2087 is quite heavy, weighing in at almost 18 lbs, and does take some getting used to with the freely moving ball system. It does provide more maneuverability but it’s tough on your back, especially if you have ailments or back issues. I found that by going slowly, it definitely helped with this issue.
With regards to different surfaces, the Bissell 2087 requires some experimentation with the knob that adjusts the vacuum cleaner to accommodate different heights for the different surfaces. I found that my runner rugs work best with the knob turned halfway between bare floor and carpet. My bare wood floors also were cleaned better on this setting and not the bare floor setting. I like the versatility, the ease of adjusting the button to figure out what works best for your surfaces, and the convenient access to the button so you can adjust on the fly while you’re vacuuming.
The pet hair eraser feature of the Bissell 2087 also does not disappoint! I found myself checking the rollers often, afraid this feature would fail to live up to the hype as my previous vacuum cleaners had failed. The Bissell 2087 did exactly as claimed. No trouble at all with Sophi’s hair or my own hair getting caught in the rollers and having to be cut out. With previous vacuum cleaners, I would have to “pre-treat” the area I was to vacuum by rolling the hair up and throwing it in the trash can before I ever started vacuuming. If I didn’t do this, I’d be able to vacuum for a few minutes before being brought to a screeching halt with hair tangled in the rollers that had to be cut out. I’ve used the Bissell 2087 many times now and I’ve only had to untangle some longer hair from the rollers on two different occasions and then I pulled it out easily. I’m not even sure if this was a necessity but I want to make sure this Bissell has longevity because it is such a great vacuum cleaner.
Finally, the best feature of the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser 2087: the HEPA filter! I absolutely LOVE this feature and, for this feature alone, the Bissell 2087 is completely worth the money. Previously when I would vacuum, Sophi would come in from outside and immediately start pawing her eyes and sneezing. Literally, every time! All because of the dust and dirt that was stirred up from vacuuming. With those previous vacuum cleaners, I honestly think I stirred up and put into the air much more than I removed. Every time I have vacuumed with the Bissell 2087, not only is nothing stirred up but Sophi never sneezes, rubs hers eyes, or has any problems with these “contact allergens”. As soon as I vacuum with the Bissell 2087, I can see a noticeable improvement in her allergy symptoms!
Overall, the Bissell 2087 delivers on being a powerful, convenient pet friendly vacuum cleaner that’s great for getting up pet hair, pet dander, dust, and dirt at a very affordable price point. If you have a pet with allergies, this is an excellent choice with the HEPA filter that cuts down on a lot of indoor allergen issues.
